About Me

Our home is here

Hi there! My name’s Nick Baker and I’m a sixty-something teacher with around twenty years experience teaching a variety of arts-based subjects though specialising in English Literature and Language. I live in Herne Hill with my wife, Rosemary, and our two children: Alex and Scarlett. You can find a full-version of my CV, here. However, here’s some edited highlights:

Born in Cardiff in the early 60s but lived and educated in the West of England. I left school at 16 and moved to London to pursue my life-long photography hobby professionally. Spent most of my twenties working as a free-lance photographer in London’s bustling advertising industry. While it was very exciting it was also financially precarious existence.

In my late twenties, I decided to do a degree because I always felt a little left out of discussions with friends and contemporaries. Got some A-levels at evening classes and went to Queen Mary College, London. Graduated with a double First in English and History. I won British Academy Scholarships to study at MA and PhD (in Victorian Literary history).

It was while finishing my PhD that I met my wife, Rosemary and we settled down in our terraced home in Herne Hill. Having been an over-grown student long enough, I took a PGCE (teaching qualification) at The Institute of Education, London and began my teaching career. You can check out my qualifications here and my DBS enhanced disclosure, here.

My teaching career has been largely in the post-16, Sixth-Form and FE sector delivering exam-based teaching for English Language and Literature courses. Currently, I’m a Visiting Tutor of English at Stanmore College, London. Last year, I was Visiting Tutor of English at West-Thames College, London. I have taught GCSE English at Southwark College, London and History at Leyton Sixth Form College, London.

I’ve written and published books on passing GCSE History and GCSE English and I’m currently writing a book called Thomas Carlyle’s Lost Theory of Tradition. You can check out my qualifications here.

To sum up, I’m a fully-qualified English teacher and tutor with many years experience getting students through their critical GCSE and A-Level examinations. I am fully cleared for work with minors and you can check out my DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate here. As this is a new venture, I don’t yet have parental references or testimonials but will post them as and when they appear.
