Exam-based, expert tuition

Does your child need extra help succeeding at GCSE English Language, Literature or A-Level English? Perhaps it’s their first time and they are just not understanding what is required and getting left behind in busy classrooms? Or just not getting the marks they need on their practice papers because they’re not getting the insights into succeeding at each question? Perhaps it’s their second time and need that extra help and know-how to get to that “pass” or aim for higher levels?

I’ve had many years experience coaching all ability ranges; adapting my approach to match my student’s abilities and aspirations. After a term of sessions, your child will be more confident of what he or she has to do at each stage of the examination. They will learn the key skill of inferential reading that lies at the heart of English at GCSE and A-Level. They will learn to differentiate between story and structure and learn to identify key structural elements that go into the telling of stories. They will learn to identify specific writer’s methods and be able to say why the writer has adopted that method to convey the meaning of the story.

Overall, they will have a far better insight into how to get the most marks out of each individual question and understand how to achieve higher marks per question. They will have a firm grasp of what goes into writing an excellent piece of their own creative fiction: framing, characterisation, structure and story arcs. They will learn how to construct their own “facts” in order to compose a convincing factual article, letter or speech.

I teach in a dedicated study in the loft of our family home. It’s bright and sunny with en-suite toilet facilities. Each student will come away from each session with an exercise book with detailed targets, sample question and answers and staged instructions on each question to aid revision and reflection in the run up to the examinations. I’ve provided an example here.
